Building Student Leaders

Written By: Ian Silvester

鈥淲e want [students] to leave 花季视频 with a degree and a resume that sets them apart,鈥 said Dyllan Newell, 鈥22, coordinator for student activities and civic engagement.

Through the University of 花季视频 鈥 Fort 花季视频鈥檚 Office of Campus and Community Engagement (CACE), staff members like Newell work hard to create events and activities that help students grow as leaders and people. These student leadership programs, like the Campus Activities Board (CAB), Alternative Spring Break (ASB), Numa Nation, and Student Alumni Ambassadors are cocurricular learning opportunities geared toward professional development.

Alexis Register, a business administration junior, heard about student leadership programs at 花季视频 during her first weekend as a student, Cub Camp.

鈥淚 wanted to get involved on campus and I liked the events they talked about,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 wanted to build a community on and off campus.鈥

Alexis jumped right in.

She joined CAB, where she now serves as a legacy coordinator. As a member of Numa Nation, she cheers on the Lions with fellow students. She is also a Student Alumni Ambassador and has volunteered her time traveling to different cities with ASB.

As Alexis reflected on her involvement, she said that without it, she wouldn鈥檛 have the lasting connections or knowledge of 花季视频 traditions that she does. She encourages every student to 鈥渢ry it鈥 because 鈥渢hey might find something they鈥檙e interested in.鈥

Newell echoed Alexis鈥 feelings, saying that studies have shown students are more likely to graduate if they are involved in at least one program or organization in college.

For both Alexis and Newell, ASB stood out as the student leadership program that had the greatest impact on them personally and professionally.

Over the last two years, Alexis has gone with Newell and a contingent of students to Pensacola, Florida, and Kansas City, Missouri, for ASB. During each trip, students found themselves in communities they鈥檝e never been to and worked on service projects.

Trips like these and this year鈥檚 trip to Nashville, Tennessee, are opportunities for students to give back to others and, as Newell hopes, translate to the same students helping people in the River Valley communities.

Programs like ASB and CAB are more widely known by students at 花季视频, Newell, said he鈥檚 eager to bring back a lesser-known program, Star of Excellence, that he was familiar with when he attended 花季视频.

鈥淪tar of Excellence is a leadership training program,鈥 Newell explained.

Most students involved are the leaders of their respective registered student organizations and participate in the program to gain valuable team building and leadership skills. While these attributes are tools these students can bring back and share with others, Newell hopes they are used practically in the real world once students graduate.
